The launch leaves Paraa after lunch and noses upstream past hippo pods and crocodiles laid out on the sandbanks, until the gorge closes in and the spray reaches the deck. Walk the last stretch and you stand at the top of it, watching an entire river squeeze itself through a gap you could almost jump.

Everything is built backwards from the permit date, so buy that before you book flights. Briefing at Bwindi is around seven, the walk in runs anywhere from forty minutes to six hours, and the hour you get with the family is timed to the minute. Nearly always sold as a three to five day package with the drive from Kampala or the hop to Kihihi built in.

The river days

Jinja is two hours from Kampala and does the loud version of Uganda. Grade five water below the source, a bungee platform over the river, quieter tubing and sunset boats for anyone who would rather stay dry. Easy to bolt onto the front or back of a safari without losing a whole day.

The best hour is the one on the water.
The Kazinga Channel fills up around four, when the buffalo come down to drink and the light turns the colour of tea. On Lake Victoria the boats push off from Ggaba just before the sun goes. Queen Elizabeth runs its night drives after that, headlamps picking up genets, porcupines and whatever else waited for the heat to leave.
The rolex is not a watch.
It is a chapati wrapped round an omelette, cooked on an oil drum at the roadside and handed over in newspaper. Around it sits the rest of the city: Nakasero market at opening, cocoa and vanilla you smell before you see, and matoke that arrives whether you ordered it or not.
Uganda gets loud east of Kampala.
The Nile leaves Lake Victoria at Jinja and is grade five water within a few kilometres, which is why the rafting companies never left. Keep going east and the ground climbs to Sipi, where three falls drop off the shoulder of Mount Elgon and the coffee grows on the slope in between.
The kingdoms were here first.
Buganda still has a kabaka, and the reed and thatch tombs at Kasubi are still kept by the clans who have always kept them. Out west, Batwa guides walk visitors through forest their families were moved out of when Bwindi was gazetted, and they say so plainly rather than perform around it. These are the days that are worth booking with a guide who lives there.

Kampala is not the whole day.
The Jinja road runs two hours east and ends where the Nile leaves the lake. Ziwa is three and a half north, and the only ground in the country holding wild rhino. Entebbe is forty minutes the other way, and the equator line is a straight run south on the Masaka road.
The order that actually works.
You will not see Uganda in a week and it is not worth trying. This is the sequence that keeps the driving sane, gets the permit morning onto fresh legs, and leaves one day at the end doing nothing.
Days 1–2
Land, then head east
Entebbe to Kampala on the first afternoon and a walking loop through the city while the jet lag is still useful. Next morning take the Jinja road to the river, loud or quiet as you prefer.

Days 3–5
North to Murchison
Break the drive at Ziwa and walk in on the rhino. Two nights at the park covers a launch trip to the base of the falls, a game drive on the delta side and the climb to the top.

South west for the permit
Down through Kibale for the chimps and Queen Elizabeth for the Kazinga Channel, then Bwindi for the morning the permit is booked. Keep the last day for Lake Bunyonyi. Everyone needs it.
